Khannouchi to represent U.S. in Edmonton
Marathon world record-holder Khalid Khannouchi was named in the American team for the world championships in Edmonton, the U.S. athletic governing body announced on Friday. It will be the first time the former Moroccan, who has lived in New York State since 1993, has represented the United States at international level. Top American marathon runners David Morris, Josh Cox, Eddy Hellebuyck, and Mike Dudley joined Khannouchi on the team, USA Track and Field announced.

Khannouchi, who ran two hours five minutes and 45 seconds to set a world record in the 1999 Chicago marathon, became a U.S. citizen last May but injuries kept him out of the Olympic trials. Khannouchi skipped the London marathon this year and has focused his preparations on the world championships, where the men's marathon will be the inaugural event on August 3. He has won the Chicago marathon three times, including last autumn, when he set a new American record of two hours seven minutes and one second.

Antonio Pinto clocks 2:06:35
to win London Marathon

London (UW) - Antonio Pinto of Portugal upstaged the world's fastest marathoner, Khalid Khannouchi, on
Sunday to win the London Marathon for the third time. Het set a course record, crossing the finish line not far from Buckingham Palace in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 6 minutes 35 seconds. That was a European record and well inside his own course mark of 2:07.55. Pinto has never been out of the first three in six attempts at this race. He pulled away from the strongest London Marathon field ever and never looked in danger of being caught. Defending champion Abdelkader El Mouaziz was second, almost a minute slower, and Khannouchi finished third in 2:08.36.

Olympic champ Josia Thugwane, finished in eighth place in an unofficial 2:10.29. However, his time will allow the South African a chance to defend the Olympic title he won in Atlanta four years ago. Khannouchi, a Moroccan-born athletic trying to gain American citizenship, had never been beaten before in three marathons and held the world's best time of 2:05.42 set at Chicago in October.

Kenyan Kiprono equals Rotterdam marathon record

Josephat Kiprono won the 21st Rotterdam marathon on Sunday in a record-equalling time as Kenyans filled the top three places in the men's race. Kiprono ran the fastest time of Sunday's three marathons across Europe,
finishing the flat 42.195-kilometre course in two hours six minutes and 50 seconds. Kiprono's performance is the 9th fastest time ever on this distance. The previous course record had been set by Belayneh Dinsamo of Ethiopia in 1988. The 27-year-old Kiprono, who won the Berlin marathon in 1999, pulled away
from countrymen Kenneth Cheruiyot and Sammy Korir after about 37 kilometres.Cheruiyot, last year's winner, finished second in a time of 2:07:15 and Korir was third in 2:08.14. Kiprono, part of the Fila team coached by Italian doctor Gabriele Rosa, confirmed the performances he gave in the Berlin marathon. In 1999, he crossed the finish line in 2:06:44, not only setting a new national record and lowering his personal best by 43 seconds, but also clocking the third fastest performance of all time at the moment.

Leading London marathon contenders

The top contenders for the 21st London marathon on the men's side range from Spain's Abel Anton to Morocco's Abdelkader El Mouaziz, and from "newcomer" Paul Tergat to Antonio Pinto of Portugal . On the women's side, Kenya's Joyce Chepchumba and Tegla Loroupe are sure favourites, along with Derartu Tulu of
Ethiopia.
MEN:

Abel Anton (ESP), 38
Now in his final season, Anton transferred from the track to the marathon with remarkable success. Winning his debut marathon at Berlin in 1996 in two hours nine minutes 15 seconds, Anton went on to win the world title in Athens the following year by outkicking compatriot Martin Fiz. In 1998 the Spaniard won the London marathon, missing the course record by two seconds when he slowed down to wave at the crowd. Anton successfully defended his world title in 1999 in front of an emotional Spanish crowd in Seville.

Abdelkader El Mouaziz (MOR)

Second in his London debut in 1998, El Mouaziz had set up a huge lead before heing overtaken by eventual winner, Anton. The Moroccan used the same tactics the following year, and this time, they proved to be successful. Last year, he chased Antonio Pinto home to take second place in a personal best time of two hoursseven minutes 33 seconds. Finished seventh at last year's Sydney Olympics before going on to win the New York marathon.

Antonio Pinto (POR), 35
Pinto is the most successful male competitor in the history of the London marathon with three wins, two second places and one third in six showings. The Portuguese set a course record of 2:07:55 in the 1997 event, and the following year, he won the Lisbon half marathon in a then world record of 59 minutes 43 seconds. Last year, he broke fellow compatriot Carlos Lopes European best when he clocked 2:06:36 in London, the fifth-best time on the all-time list.

Paul Tergat (KEN), 31

No marathon debut has been more eagerly awaited than that of Kenya's five-time world cross country champion. Tergat briefly held the world 10,000 metres record but was forced to live in the shadow of the dominant Haile Gebrslassie who has beaten him to the line in two Olympic and two world championship finals. Tergat came desperately close to beating the great Ethiopian in last year's Sydney Games 10,000m final, but lost by the narrowest margin in Olympic history.
